100W Power Bank Guide: Output Profiles, Capacity and Flight Rules

Choose a 100W power bank by sustained USB-C output, exact USB Power Delivery profiles, stored energy in watt-hours and multi-port behavior—not by the “100W” headline alone. Watts describe output rate; watt-hours describe stored energy. A 100W label does not mean 100Wh capacity, and a 100Wh pack does not automatically deliver 100W.

Read the USB PD Profiles, Not Only the Wattage

A power bank reaches 100W only when the source port, connected device and cable support a compatible operating condition. Check the declared fixed PDOs, PPS range and any EPR requirement. Confirm whether “100W” describes output, input, total combined output or a temporary peak.

100W and 100Wh Answer Different Questions

  • W: power delivered or accepted at a moment.
  • Wh: stored energy used for runtime and travel limits.
  • mAh: must be paired with nominal voltage before conversion to Wh.

Use the mAh-to-Wh calculator when the product label provides capacity and voltage. Do not divide cell-level mAh directly by a laptop battery’s mAh; voltage and conversion loss matter.

Check Multi-Port Allocation and Sustained Output

A single USB-C port may provide the headline output only when used alone. Look for an allocation table covering C1, C2, USB-A and the combinations you intend to use. For product or lot approval, record the exact model, PD profiles, cable, electronic load, ambient temperature, test duration, cutoff and surface temperature. Without those conditions, “sustains 100W” is not a reproducible claim.

Flight Rules Follow Battery Energy

FAA PackSafe treats power banks as spare lithium batteries carried in carry-on baggage. In the United States, batteries up to 100Wh are generally allowed; 101–160Wh require airline approval and quantity restrictions apply. Check the product’s printed Wh rating and the operating airline’s current rules. Output wattage does not determine the travel category.
