Choose a backpacking power bank by building an energy budget in watt-hours, then comparing that requirement with finished weight, output profiles, recharge time, enclosure claims and the exact devices in the kit. For procurement teams, approve a model only after the label, technical file and physical sample agree; a large mAh number alone does not prove usable energy, weather resistance or field durability.
Build the Trip Energy Budget in Watt-Hours
List each device, its battery energy in Wh, and how many full-charge equivalents the trip requires. If a device label gives only mAh and nominal voltage, use Wh = mAh × V ÷ 1,000. The mAh-to-Wh calculator explains why mAh values measured at different voltages cannot be compared directly.
Do not assume that every watt-hour printed on a power bank reaches the device. The pack and device both perform voltage conversion, while cable resistance, temperature and device use consume part of the energy. For a specific model, use its declared rated output capacity when available or measure delivered Wh under the intended load.

Compare Weight with the Same Energy Basis
Compare finished product weight against rated or measured output energy, not against the largest printed mAh figure. Include built-in cables, protective cases and any required wall charger in the carried weight. A lighter pack can be the better choice when it covers the actual trip budget; a larger pack is useful only when its additional energy is needed.

Check Output Profiles, Cables and Recharge Time
Match each device to an output port and supported charging profile. Connector shape does not prove protocol or wattage support. For USB-C equipment, record the required Power Delivery profile, the cable rating and what happens when multiple ports are used together. Also check how the power bank itself recharges: an expedition plan can fail if the pack needs longer at the available input than the route allows.
Verify Outdoor and Durability Claims Per Model
Treat ingress-protection, drop, operating-temperature and cycle-life claims as model-specific. Ask for the applicable test report, exact sample identity and pass criteria; do not infer an IP rating from a rubber port cover or a rugged-looking shell. Inspect the sample for exposed seams, weak port retention, sharp edges and cable strain. Keep the pack dry and within the maker’s operating limits, and stop using a unit that is swollen, leaking, unusually hot or visibly damaged.
Treat Solar Charging as a Separate System
A small panel attached to a power bank should not be assumed to refill it on a normal hiking day. Model solar input from the panel’s rated watts, measured field output, exposure time and conversion losses. If off-grid recharge is essential, qualify the panel and power bank together under the expected angle, shade and temperature, while keeping the battery out of unsafe heat.
