Connect a cable box to a TV with HDMI by using the box’s HDMI output and the TV’s HDMI input, then selecting that input on the TV. Choose the cable category for the box’s actual output mode—not an unsupported “future-proof” label. If an AV receiver or soundbar sits in the path, verify every device and cable in that chain.

Choose Direct-to-TV or Receiver Pass-Through
| Goal | Connection | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Simplest TV setup | Cable box HDMI out → TV HDMI in | TV input and box output setting |
| Receiver handles switching/audio | Box → AVR HDMI in → AVR HDMI out → TV | AVR pass-through mode and both cables |
| TV sends sound to a soundbar | Box → TV; TV ARC/eARC → soundbar | Labelled ARC/eARC ports, CEC and audio output |
Select the Cable from the Box’s Real Output
Check the exact cable-box and TV manuals. A conventional HD box may need only a supported High Speed link; 4K HDR service can require a higher certified category. Ultra High Speed is useful only when the system needs features in that category. A cable cannot add 4K, HDR or advanced audio to a box or TV that does not support it. Use the HDMI cable buying guide for the mode-to-category decision.
Some televisions require a per-input setting before accepting their highest supported format. If the cable box is limited to a lower mode, leave that setting conservative rather than forcing an unnecessary high-bandwidth configuration.
Complete the Setup in a Known Order
- Power off the cable box, TV and receiver/soundbar if used.
- Connect HDMI output to the chosen HDMI input without adapters for the first test.
- Power the TV first, select the correct input, then power the cable box.
- Start with Auto or a conservative output mode supported by the TV.
- After a stable picture, enable 4K, HDR and surround formats individually.
Fix “No Signal,” Black Screens or a Soft Image
- Confirm that the cable is in HDMI out on the box and HDMI in on the TV.
- Test another TV input and a known-good cable without the receiver.
- Restart the box and TV to rebuild the HDMI handshake.
- Return the box to a resolution the TV accepts.
- If menus look sharp but a channel looks soft, the program/source quality may be the limit rather than the cable.
Fix Missing or Incorrect Audio
For a direct box-to-TV link, select HDMI audio on the cable box and the intended speakers on the TV. If a receiver or soundbar cannot decode the selected bitstream, test stereo PCM. For Audio Return Channel problems, follow the HDMI ARC no-sound sequence and simplify the system to one source, TV and audio device.
