Check the Exact Mac’s External-Display Limits
Open Apple’s technical specifications or support page for the exact Mac model. Record the number of supported external displays, maximum resolution and refresh rate, and whether the limit changes when more than one display is connected. The adapter or cable cannot add a display mode the Mac does not output.

Match the Adapter and Cable to One Direction
A direct HDMI output uses a standard HDMI cable. A USB-C/Thunderbolt output relies on the Mac’s supported display path and on the adapter or dock converting it to HDMI.
