TV Cable Guide: HDMI, Ethernet and Telephone Connections

HDMI, Ethernet and telephone cables are not substitutes on a TV. HDMI carries picture and supported audio between an AV source and the TV. Ethernet connects a smart TV to a network. A telephone/LINE lead serves a phone or modem function when the equipment provides that port. Match the cable to the labelled socket; an RJ-style plug does not turn a network or phone cable into HDMI.

Read the Socket Label Before the Connector Shape

Look for HDMI, HDMI ARC/eARC, LAN/Ethernet, ANT/CABLE, LINE or PHONE on the television and connected equipment. The label identifies the interface job. A smart TV may have HDMI inputs and a LAN port but no telephone socket. A modem or hotel-room controller may introduce additional phone-style connections that are not part of the TV’s video input.

If the task is to show a streaming box, console, computer or disc player on the TV, start with a compatible HDMI output and the correct TV HDMI input. If the task is internet access for smart-TV apps, use Wi-Fi or the TV’s documented Ethernet port.

Use One Cable for Each Intended Function

Connector families can look related from a distance, but they have different contact layouts, signaling and equipment roles. Never force a plug into a similar-looking socket. Use the device manual when the label is hidden behind a wall mount.

An HDMI Extender over Category Cable Is a Complete System

Some HDMI extension kits use category cabling between a transmitter and receiver. That does not mean a passive HDMI-to-RJ45 lead converts the signal or that every extender can pass through an Ethernet switch. Point-to-point extension and HDMI over IP are different architectures.

Before closing a wall or furniture route, test the exact source, TV input, network function and audio return path. Label both ends of every installed cable so a later service visit does not exchange LAN, phone and HDMI roles.
