Use a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter when the source has DisplayPort and the display has HDMI. The connection is directional. A passive adapter requires a source that supports the needed dual-mode output; an active adapter performs protocol conversion. Match the exact resolution, refresh rate, HDR, audio and HDCP requirements—connector fit alone is not enough.

DisplayPort to HDMI Is Not the Same as HDMI to DisplayPort
This guide covers a DisplayPort output on a computer, dock or graphics card connected to an HDMI input on a monitor, television or projector. The reverse direction commonly needs a different active converter and may need USB power. Check the arrows or source/display labels before ordering.
Passive and Active Adapters Depend on the Source

Do not infer passive compatibility from the DisplayPort connector alone. Verify the graphics device or dock documentation and the adapter’s declared input direction.
Write the Complete Required Video Mode

Audio, HDR and Content Protection Need Explicit Support
DisplayPort can carry audio, but the operating system must select the HDMI display as an audio device. HDR and HDCP behavior depend on the entire chain. An adapter that produces a desktop image does not prove it will pass every protected video service, color format or audio channel configuration.
Multi-Display Setups Add Bandwidth and Conversion Limits
For an MST hub or dock, record the total source link, the number of displays and each output mode. A passive adapter can impose different restrictions in a multi-display path. Test every display active at once and repeat after sleep, restart and hot-plug events.
Diagnose No Signal in a Short Sequence
- Confirm DisplayPort source → HDMI display direction.
- Test a known-good short HDMI cable and the target display input.
- Set a lower resolution/refresh rate, then increase one variable at a time.
- Update graphics and dock firmware from the device maker.
- Check audio output, HDR and HDCP separately.
- If passive fails on a documented source, test an active adapter declared for the required mode.
