Choose a DisplayPort cable by the highest link rate supported by both the source and display. DP80 is for UHBR20/80Gbps-capable links; DP54 covers UHBR13.5/54Gbps and can support passive runs up to two metres under VESA’s DP54 specification. Older HBR3 equipment does not become UHBR-capable when connected with a DP80 cable.

The Cable Cannot Upgrade the Source or Display
The working mode is limited by the weakest part of the chain: GPU or dock output, adapter, cable, monitor input and settings. A USB-C port also needs DisplayPort Alt Mode or another supported display path. For a device-specific example, use the Android tablet DP Alt Mode guide. Record the exact port, not only the laptop or monitor model name.
Resolution, Refresh Rate and DSC
A simple “4K cable” label is not enough because color depth, chroma format, HDR and refresh rate all change bandwidth. Display Stream Compression (DSC) can enable higher modes when both endpoints support it. Multi-Stream Transport (MST) can carry multiple displays, but every downstream display still shares the source link budget.

DisplayPort or HDMI?
Choose DisplayPort when the monitor, GPU or dock exposes the required DP mode, especially for PC high-refresh, MST or USB-C display paths. Choose HDMI when the source/display ecosystem is TV-oriented or only HDMI exposes the desired feature. Connector preference cannot overcome a weaker port implementation.

Length, Active Cables and Latches
Use the shortest practical certified cable. VESA’s DisplayPort 2.1a announcement states that DP54 supports UHBR13.5 over passive cables up to two metres. Longer or unusual routes may require an active design that must be checked for directionality. Latching full-size DP plugs resist accidental removal but should always be released before pulling.
