Choose DisplayPort or HDMI from the ports and modes supported by the exact source and display. DisplayPort is common on PCs and monitors; HDMI is common on TVs, consoles and AV receivers. Neither connector is universally faster or better. Compare resolution, refresh rate, HDR, variable refresh, audio, multi-monitor needs and cable certification, then prefer a direct native connection over an adapter when both endpoints offer one.

Start with the Source Output and Display Input
List the exact port on the GPU, laptop, dock, console or media player and the exact input on the monitor or TV. Port capability can vary within the same device: one HDMI input may support a higher refresh mode while another is reserved for ARC/eARC, and a USB-C port may or may not carry DisplayPort Alt Mode.
A connector’s physical presence does not prove every feature in its underlying specification. Read the device manuals and input labels before choosing the cable.
Compare the Complete Mode, Not Version Numbers Alone

DisplayPort link-rate labels and HDMI cable certification categories describe different systems. Do not compare a single headline bandwidth number without considering encoding, compression and endpoint implementation.
Choose by Use Case
- PC monitor: use the direct port that supports the monitor’s target refresh, HDR and variable-refresh mode; the DisplayPort guide explains DP cable labels.
- TV or console: HDMI is usually the native ecosystem and may be required for TV audio-return features.
- Docking station: verify what the host and dock expose through each output, including shared bandwidth.
- Multi-monitor workstation: check how many displays the GPU supports and which combinations can run simultaneously.
Treat Conversion Direction as a Separate Requirement
DisplayPort-to-HDMI and HDMI-to-DisplayPort are not interchangeable. Some DP sources work through a passive adapter for certain modes; the reverse HDMI-source-to-DP-display path normally needs an active converter. USB-C adapters also require documented video output on the host port. Prefer a native cable when possible because an adapter adds another mode and handshake limit.
Verify the Negotiated Result
- Connect the source directly to the display.
- Start at a documented baseline mode.
- Confirm the display information screen shows the intended resolution/refresh.
- Enable HDR, variable refresh and audio one feature at a time.
- Run sleep/wake and input-switch tests.
- If the link fails, remove adapters/switches and substitute a known-good cable.
