Use a DVI-to-HDMI adapter or cable only after identifying the DVI port. Digital DVI-D and the digital portion of DVI-I can often connect to HDMI for video when both devices accept compatible formats. DVI-A is analog and needs conversion. Expect to route audio separately unless the exact source and adapter documentation explicitly says otherwise.

Compare the connector’s pin layout with the equipment manual rather than relying only on the label “DVI.” Single-link and dual-link layouts also differ. A passive HDMI adapter does not create dual-link DVI capability, and the working resolution is limited by the source, display and adapter path.
A Passive Adapter Carries Compatible Digital Video
DVI and HDMI both use TMDS-based digital video signaling, which is why a simple adapter can work between compatible digital endpoints. That is signal routing, not a universal conversion promise. If either side requires an analog signal, scaling, a different timing format or another protocol change, use a powered active converter designed for that direction.

Plan Audio, HDCP and Direction Separately
DVI is primarily a video interface, so a DVI monitor normally needs a separate audio path. Do not promise audio from a passive adapter unless both the source implementation and product documentation support it. Protected video can also fail when the source, adapter and display do not complete the required content-protection handshake.
Passive digital adapters are commonly usable in either physical direction for compatible video, but active converters are directional. Read the input and output labels before purchase.
Select by Port, Mode and Installation
- Photograph or record the exact DVI connector and device model.
- Confirm source output and display input direction.
- Check the required resolution and refresh rate in both device manuals.
- Plan a separate audio cable when the DVI endpoint has no supported audio path.
- Choose a short, strain-relieved adapter for fixed installations and secure the DVI screws without overtightening.

Fix “No Signal” in a Controlled Order
- Verify the display input and DVI port type.
- Test a direct, short connection without a switch or extender.
