Use HDMI when both devices support it: one digital connection can carry video and audio and is the normal choice for modern TVs, consoles and computers. Use component video mainly for legacy equipment. Component carries analog YPbPr video over three plugs, usually needs separate audio cables, and cannot connect to HDMI without an active converter.

Connector type alone does not guarantee a particular resolution or refresh rate. With HDMI, the source, display, selected ports, cable and settings must all support the requested mode. With component video, analog output limits and the display’s accepted input formats determine the result.
Choose HDMI Unless a Legacy Port Requires Component
For a current television, game console, streaming player or computer, HDMI is normally the direct path. It reduces cable count and preserves the digital link. Choose the cable category for the actual mode rather than buying only by the version number printed on packaging. Component video remains useful when a working legacy device has Y, Pb and Pr outputs and the display has matching inputs. Match all three video plugs by label and connect the separate left/right audio path if sound is required. Composite video is different: its single yellow plug must not be treated as interchangeable with the three-plug component signal.
HDMI and Component Need Active Conversion
A passive plug adapter cannot translate analog component video into digital HDMI, or HDMI into component. Use an active converter designed for the required direction. “HDMI to component” and “component to HDMI” are not the same product.
- Confirm the conversion direction before buying.
- Check the exact input and output formats supported by the converter.
- Provide external power when the converter requires it.
- Account for separate audio routing on the component side.
- Remember that a converter cannot create HDR, HDCP support or a higher-quality source signal that the original equipment does not provide.
Troubleshoot One Part of the Chain at a Time
- Verify the selected input on the display.
- Confirm each plug is connected to the matching labeled port.
- Test the source and display directly before adding a converter or extension.
- Set the source to a format accepted by the display or converter.

- For component, inspect all three video leads because one loose lead can alter color or remove the picture.
