To connect a desktop computer to a monitor by HDMI, use the HDMI output on the graphics card—or the motherboard only when the system’s integrated graphics supports it—and the monitor’s HDMI input. Select the cable category for the shared resolution and refresh rate. “CPU to monitor cable” is common wording, but the signal comes from a display output, not from the processor package itself.

A motherboard HDMI port can remain inactive when the processor lacks integrated graphics or firmware disables it. Check the PC/GPU manual instead of assuming every visible port is live.
Match the HDMI Cable to the Shared Mode

Connect and Configure a Direct Baseline
- Power the monitor and select its HDMI input.
- Connect directly from the active GPU output.
- Start with a supported resolution/refresh rate.
- Install the GPU vendor’s supported driver if required.
- Enable HDR or variable refresh only after the basic desktop is stable.
Fix No Signal, 30Hz Limits or Intermittent Video
- Move the cable from the motherboard to the graphics card when appropriate.
- Test another monitor input and a known-good cable.
- Reduce refresh rate/color depth to identify a mode limit.
- Remove switches, couplers and receivers for the baseline.
- Check monitor input settings and GPU control-panel output mode.
Use DisplayPort When It Better Matches the Monitor

For more than one monitor, also verify how many displays the GPU supports simultaneously and which port combinations share resources. A second physical output does not by itself guarantee the desired pair of resolutions and refresh rates.
If an adapter is unavoidable, choose it for the source direction and required mode. Test the direct native connection first so an adapter fault is not confused with a GPU or monitor setting.
