For a PlayStation 3, use a sound HDMI cable that reaches the TV without strain; newer 4K120 or 8K cable claims do not improve the console’s output. Connect the PS3 directly to the TV first, select HDMI in the PS3 video output settings, and choose a resolution the TV supports. Add a soundbar, receiver or long cable only after the direct path works.
A PS3 Does Not Need a Modern Gaming-Cable Upgrade
HDMI cable categories describe tested transmission capability; they do not add resolution or frame rate to a source. For a normal PS3-to-TV connection, choose a legitimate HDMI cable of practical length with connectors that fit firmly. A current certified higher-category cable can be backward-compatible, but its extra bandwidth is not a PS3 performance upgrade.

Set the PS3 Video Output to HDMI
- Turn off the PS3 and TV, then connect the HDMI cable.

- Select HDMI, then choose automatic detection or a resolution the TV documentation confirms.
- Confirm the displayed image before adding other equipment.

Treat Audio as a Separate Setting
If video works but audio does not, confirm the TV or receiver input, then review PS3 audio output settings. Test audio through the TV before introducing a receiver, splitter or extractor. A different cable category will not correct an unsupported audio format or wrong device input.
Use a Direct Known-Good Path for No Signal
- Reseat both HDMI plugs and verify the TV input.
- Try another HDMI input on the TV.
- Test a short known-good cable.
- Remove receivers, switches and wall plates.
- Reset the PS3 video output according to the official console instructions when a previous display setting is incompatible.
- Test the console on another display before concluding the HDMI port has failed.
Inspect Ports Before Replacing More Equipment
