Choose a Chromebook display cable by identifying the Chromebook’s output first. A model with native HDMI can connect with an HDMI cable matched to the target resolution and refresh rate. A model that relies on USB-C needs a compatible display-output path plus the correct directional adapter or cable; an HDMI cable cannot add video support to an unsupported USB-C port.
Identify the Chromebook’s Actual Display Output
Google’s Chromebook Help says a Chromebook can connect to a monitor or TV through HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, VGA or USB-C, depending on the model and connection. Check the exact Chromebook specification or included instructions before buying a cable or adapter.

Match the HDMI Cable to the Mode, Not the Chromebook Name
For ordinary classroom or office displays, start with the resolution and refresh rate the Chromebook and display both support. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes Premium High Speed HDMI cables for modes up to 18Gbps, including 4K60 and HDR use cases, while Ultra High Speed HDMI cables are the certified category for higher-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 modes.

Check Direction and Adapter Limits
USB-C and HDMI use different signaling paths. Verify that the product converts from a USB-C source to an HDMI display, not the reverse. Record the supported resolution, refresh rate, HDR and audio behavior, plus whether USB-C charging pass-through is required. A dock may also share bandwidth among video, data and other ports.
Use the Shortest Diagnostic Path
- Confirm the TV or monitor is on the selected HDMI input.
- Reconnect the cable and adapter at both ends.
- Open Chromebook display settings and check whether the external display appears.
- Test a lower resolution or refresh rate.
- Remove the dock and test a direct known-good connection when possible.
- Test each cable, adapter and display separately before replacing the full chain.
