Computer to TV HDMI Guide: Cable, Settings and Troubleshooting

To connect a computer to a TV, identify the computer’s active HDMI output (or the correct directional USB-C/DisplayPort adapter), use the TV’s intended HDMI input, and choose a cable category for their shared resolution, refresh rate and HDR mode. Start with a direct connection, then set display mode, scaling and audio. A more expensive cable cannot add capabilities that the computer, adapter or TV lacks.

Identify the Computer’s Active Video Output

Computer portConnection to TV
HDMIDirect HDMI-to-HDMI cable
USB-C with documented video outputDirectional USB-C-to-HDMI adapter/cable for the required mode
DisplayPort/Mini DisplayPortDirectional DP-to-HDMI adapter/cable selected for the mode
No documented video-capable portDo not assume a charge-only USB port can output video

On a desktop with a discrete graphics card, connect to the graphics card rather than an inactive motherboard port. On a laptop, verify whether its USB-C port supports video before buying an adapter.

Choose for the Shared Resolution, Refresh and HDR Mode

Check both endpoint specifications. A 4K60 desktop presentation, a 4K120 gaming session and a 1080p film do not impose the same link requirements. Select the appropriate certified category and practical length; the HDMI cable buying guide compares the main categories.

If the route crosses a room, measure the actual path and account for service loops. Avoid unnecessary wall plates or couplers during the first test because each extra connection adds another variable.

Set Display Mode, Scaling and Audio

  1. Select the connected HDMI input on the TV.
  2. Choose duplicate/mirror or extend mode on the computer.
  3. Set a resolution and refresh rate supported by that TV input.
  4. Use the TV’s PC/game input mode where appropriate to manage overscan and latency.
  5. Select the HDMI/TV audio device on the computer.
  6. Enable HDR only after the standard desktop is stable.

If a soundbar or receiver handles the audio return path, troubleshoot that separately with the HDMI ARC no-sound guide.

Match the Setup to Presentation, Streaming or Gaming

For presentations, prioritize readable scaling and reliable reconnect behavior. For films, confirm HDR and audio format across the full path. For gaming, confirm the exact TV input supports the desired refresh rate and variable-refresh feature, and use a low-latency picture mode. Do not treat a cable category as proof that every TV port supports the same mode.

Fix No Picture, Cropped Image or Missing Sound

  • Test a direct computer-to-TV connection and another TV HDMI input.
  • Start at 1080p/60 or another documented baseline, then increase the mode.
  • Check adapter direction and documented USB-C video support.
  • Disable overscan or choose a PC-labelled input if the desktop is cropped.
  • Reselect the TV as the computer’s audio output.
  • Power-cycle both endpoints with the cable connected if negotiation remains stuck.
