The original Wii does not have an HDMI output. To connect it to an HDMI-only television, use a powered Wii-to-HDMI converter that accepts the console’s analog AV output, then connect the converter to the TV with a normal HDMI cable. The adapter can convert and scale the signal, but it cannot create native HD detail that the Wii did not output.

A passive cable with a Wii plug at one end and HDMI at the other cannot perform analog-to-digital conversion unless active electronics are built into the product. Check the signal direction and power requirement.
How to Connect a Wii to an HDMI Television
- Turn off the console and television.
- Connect the converter to the Wii AV port.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the converter output to the TV.
- Supply power to the converter if its instructions require it.
- Select the matching HDMI input on the TV.
- Open Wii System Settings and choose the supported TV resolution and widescreen setting.
Nintendo documents 480p as the EDTV/HDTV setting for compatible Wii connections. The converter and television must accept the selected signal. Do not assume an adapter advertised as 1080p output makes the game render at 1080p.
What Picture and Audio Quality to Expect
Conversion can make the Wii usable on a modern HDMI input, but scaling quality varies by adapter and television. Text edges, color and input delay may differ. Audio normally travels through HDMI after conversion; some adapters also expose a separate analog audio output.

Fix No Signal, Wrong Colors or Missing Sound
- Confirm the TV is on the correct HDMI input.
- Reseat the adapter and HDMI cable.
