An HDMI cable does not create surround sound by itself. The source, TV or AV receiver, soundbar, selected HDMI ports and audio settings must all support the format and return path. Use direct HDMI where possible, use the TV’s labelled ARC/eARC port for TV-to-audio return, and choose a certified cable category that meets the complete video-plus-audio mode at the installed length.

Check format support at every device in the chosen path. A source may offer a format that the TV cannot pass through, or a soundbar may accept it only through a specific input. Device support is separate from cable capability.
ARC and eARC Must Be Enabled at Both Ends
Connect the TV port labelled ARC or eARC to the matching audio-system port. Enable the TV’s external-speaker/audio-system output and its HDMI control function, which different brands may call CEC, Anynet+, Bravia Sync, Simplink or another name. Select the audio system’s TV/ARC/eARC input.
eARC provides a higher-capability return path than ARC, but only when both endpoints implement it and the settings are correct. If either end supports only ARC, the link operates within that shared path rather than gaining eARC from the cable label.
Match the Cable to Video and Return-Channel Requirements
For a source-to-TV or receiver-to-TV route, record resolution, refresh rate, HDR/color requirements and installed length in addition to audio. Choose an official HDMI cable category that covers that complete mode. For ARC/eARC, follow the endpoint manuals and the official cable guidance; avoid assuming that an HDMI version printed on a generic cable proves certification.
