How to Get Water Out of a Charging Port Safely

If a phone reports liquid in the charging port, unplug the cable and do not reconnect it until the port is dry. Hold the phone with the connector facing down, tap it gently against your hand to help excess liquid leave, then place it in a dry area with airflow. Do not use heat, compressed air, rice or an object inside the port. Follow the phone maker’s exact timing and warning screen.

What to Do When the Charging Port Is Wet

  1. Disconnect the charging cable from the phone and power adapter.
  2. If the device maker instructs you to power off the phone, do so.
  3. With the connector facing down, gently tap the phone against your hand to remove excess liquid.
  4. Leave the phone in a dry place with natural airflow.
  5. Keep the cable end dry as well; a wet cable can trigger another warning.

These steps are for liquid in an external charging connector. If the phone was submerged, contains salt water or another contaminant, or shows damage elsewhere, follow the maker’s broader liquid-damage instructions rather than treating the port as the only affected area.

When Can You Try Wired Charging Again?

Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact phone. Apple says an iPhone can be tried again after at least 30 minutes; if the alert returns, liquid may remain and complete drying can take up to 24 hours. Do not apply that timing as a universal rule to every Android model. Samsung devices can display a water-drop warning and block charging until moisture is no longer detected.

If the phone supports wireless charging and its exterior is dry, the manufacturer may allow that as a temporary alternative. Confirm the exact model guidance and make sure the rear surface and charger are dry before use.

Stop and Seek Service When the Warning Persists

Arrange manufacturer support if the alert returns with multiple dry, known-good cables after the stated drying period, the port is visibly damaged or contaminated, or the phone shows abnormal heat, odor, swelling, smoke or other active failure signs. Do not continue testing an actively overheating or smoking device.

A liquid warning is not proof that the charging cable is defective. Diagnose the phone, cable and power source separately after the port is confirmed dry.
