How to Identify USB Cable Types, Connectors and Capabilities

Identify a USB cable in two stages: first identify the connector at each end, then verify its electrical capabilities from trusted markings or documentation. USB-A, USB-B, Micro-USB and USB-C describe physical connector families; they do not by themselves prove data speed, charging power or video support. When the cable has no reliable label, test it only for a low-risk task and replace it when the required capability matters.

Identify the Connector at Both Ends

Name a cable by both ends—for example, USB-A to USB-C—not merely “USB cable.” This immediately determines physical fit and helps distinguish a charging lead from a printer, accessory or device-to-device cable.

Read Data and Power Markings Separately

Look for trusted USB performance and power logos, packaging and exact model documentation. Current USB-IF Type-C power markings distinguish 60W and 240W cable capability; older products may use 100W wording. A power label does not prove USB4, a 40Gbps data rate or display support, and a data logo does not state every charging profile.

Check the Plug, Jacket and E-Marker Evidence

  • Read any printed model, wattage or data-rate marking on the cable.
  • Check packaging or the manufacturer page for the exact length/model.
  • Do not infer speed from blue plastic, braid, thickness or connector color alone.
  • For higher-current USB-C cables, verify the declared e-marker/current capability.
  • Remove cables with loose shells, exposed conductors or intermittent connection.

Test an Unknown Cable with a Controlled Task

  1. Start with a known-good charger/host and device.
  2. Test charging at a safe, supported baseline.
  3. For data, copy a noncritical file and confirm the connection remains stable.
  4. For video or docking, use a cable documented for that function rather than trial-and-error with an unlabeled lead.
  5. Label the cable after its identity and capability are verified.

A USB power/data meter can help inspect negotiation, but a single reading is not a certification. Keep the tested devices, conditions and cable identity with the result.

Avoid Treating Construction as a Specification

Braiding, gold-colored contacts and a thick jacket can affect handling or durability but do not establish power or data capability.
