How to Know If Your Power Bank Is Broken

Stop using and charging a power bank immediately if it is swollen, leaking, unusually hot, smells chemical, or shows smoke, hissing, fumes or flames. Do not press, puncture, open, or handle a swollen or ruptured pack with bare hands. If it is smoking, venting, burning or heating rapidly, leave the area, avoid the fumes and call local emergency services; do not approach it to move it. If no physical danger sign is present, test the cable, charger, port and phone one at a time before deciding the power bank itself has failed.

Unsafe Signs: Do Not Continue Testing

Separate inactive damage from an active thermal event. Swelling, a split casing, leakage or a strong chemical odor still means stop using and charging the pack; do not continue testing, press it flat, open it, freeze it, immerse it or attempt one final discharge. Smoke, hissing or venting, fumes, flames, or rapidly rising heat are active-event signs: leave the area, keep others away, avoid the fumes and contact local emergency services. Do not return to move or handle the device.

Do not use pass-through charging during diagnosis. It adds a second power path and more heat, making the result harder to interpret.

No Output, Slow Charging or Repeated Disconnects

A bank that repeatedly starts and stops may be shutting down under load, negotiating an unsupported fast-charge mode, or losing contact at a worn connector. First test at ordinary phone-charging power with a short known-good cable. If every compatible device disconnects on every port, retire the bank rather than relying on it for travel or emergencies.

Normal Warmth vs Abnormal Heat

Some warmth during fast charging is normal because energy conversion is not perfectly efficient. Stop the test when heat is concentrated at one connector, the casing becomes painful to hold, temperature continues rising after the load is removed, or heat appears together with odor, swelling or shutdowns. A phone and power bank both becoming hot can also indicate a high-resistance cable or connector, so isolate the cable before blaming only one device.

Capacity Loss and Misleading LEDs

A shorter runtime by itself does not prove immediate danger, but a sharp change matters. Compare the same phone, starting battery percentage, cable and usage state. If the result drops repeatedly while the pack also becomes hotter or shuts down early, replacement is more sensible than continued cycling. LEDs can drift out of calibration; stable energy delivery matters more than a four-light display.

Dispose of a Failed Power Bank Safely

The U.S. EPA says lithium-ion batteries should not go in household trash or curbside recycling. Use a battery-recycling or household hazardous-waste collection point, protect exposed terminals from shorts, and tell the facility if the pack is swollen or damaged. FAA guidance also treats power banks as spare lithium batteries; a damaged pack should not be packed for a flight or mailed without carrier-specific dangerous-goods instructions.

A distributor or service team needs two separate workflows: an emergency response for active battery events and a controlled failure record for a stable unit. Do not continue electrical testing on a swollen, leaking, rapidly heating, smoking, hissing or venting pack.

Do not ship a damaged lithium battery back through an ordinary parcel route without carrier-specific dangerous-goods instructions. For a finished-product or supplier-quality review, use the project inquiry only after the immediate safety task is complete.
