Test an HDMI cable by changing one variable at a time. First prove the source and display with a short known-good cable. Then insert the cable under test, use the same ports and settings, and check the highest required video and audio mode. A pass at 1080p does not prove 4K HDR or 4K120, and a black screen does not prove the cable is bad until ports, input and settings are controlled.

Inspect the Cable and Ports First
Disconnect the cable and look for bent shells, loose plugs, debris, corrosion, cuts, crushing or sharp kinks. Check both device ports for damage and confirm the cable direction if it is active or optical. Do not keep flexing a damaged lead to make the picture return.
Read the packaging or jacket for the official cable category and certification label where applicable. A printed resolution claim without a verifiable program is not the same as a controlled test.
Create a Known-Good A/B Test
- Connect the source directly to the display with a short known-good cable.
- Select the exact display input and confirm a stable picture.
- Record resolution, refresh rate, HDR/color, audio and source settings.
- Power down if the device manuals require it, then substitute the cable under test.
- Keep the same ports and settings; remove receivers, splitters and wall plates for the first comparison.
- Run the test long enough to expose the reported intermittent symptom.
If both cables fail, the fault is more likely elsewhere in the chain. If only the test cable fails under identical conditions, the cable becomes the primary suspect.

Start with a simple mode to establish a picture, then enable the highest required mode. Passing a lower mode proves continuity, not full installed capability.
Use the Failure Pattern to Choose the Next Check
- No signal: verify input, source output, direction and the short control cable.
- Sparkles or dropouts: simplify the path and test a lower mode, then compare the certified control.
- Picture but no audio: check source audio output and ARC/eARC topology before replacing the cable.
- Failure only through a wall plate: test each segment and connection point separately.
- Failure when moved: stop stressing the lead and replace it if the A/B test confirms intermittency.

Understand What a Cable Tester Proves
A basic continuity tester can identify open, shorted or miswired conductors but may not prove stable operation at a high-bandwidth HDMI mode. A professional analyzer or certified test workflow can evaluate more, but the final source-to-display chain still needs an operational test at the installed length.
For incoming inspection, record exact cable model, length, label/QR result, sample size, equipment, mode, duration and outcome. Do not publish a category-wide pass rate from one sample or a continuity-only result.
