A 30,000mAh power bank is often above 100Wh. At 3.7V it equals about 111Wh, so under U.S. FAA passenger guidance it normally requires airline approval, must stay in carry-on baggage and is subject to quantity limits. Airline and route rules can be stricter, so approval is not automatic.

Convert the Product Rating to Watt-Hours
Wh = mAh × nominal voltage ÷ 1,000
For a 30,000mAh pack rated at 3.7V:
30,000 × 3.7 ÷ 1,000 = 111Wh
Do not assume every 30,000mAh product uses 3.7V. Check the printed Wh label or calculate using the exact nominal voltage on the product. A missing, unreadable or inconsistent label can create problems at check-in or security.

A 111Wh example falls in the airline-approval band. Contact the operating airline before travel and provide the exact Wh label. Codeshare trips may involve more than one carrier, and local rules can differ.
Do not rely on the capacity advertised in a marketplace title when the case label says something different. Security staff need an identifiable rating, and approval normally concerns the actual battery being carried. Keep the product manual or manufacturer specification available, but the battery label should remain readable.
Power Banks Belong in Carry-On Baggage
Power banks are spare lithium batteries, not installed device batteries. Keep them in carry-on baggage. Protect terminals from short circuit by using the original cover, a protective pouch or another method that prevents contact with metal objects. Prevent accidental activation and keep the pack accessible to cabin crew.
Do not travel with a swollen, leaking, recalled, smoking, hissing or rapidly heating pack. If an active event starts, move away and notify airline or airport personnel rather than handling the battery.
Preflight Checklist
- Read the exact mAh, nominal voltage and Wh label.
- Confirm the pack is 160Wh or less.
- Request airline approval in advance when it is 101–160Wh.
- Check the number of spare batteries allowed.
- Pack it in carry-on baggage with protected terminals.
- Recheck the operating airline and route rules before departure.
If approval cannot be confirmed, choose a clearly labeled pack at or below 100Wh instead of arriving at the airport with a conditional battery. Do not relabel or cover the original rating, and never divide one battery into a lower paper rating.
