Choose a laptop charger by the laptop’s exact power-input method and electrical requirements. For USB-C charging, confirm that the laptop accepts USB Power Delivery, then match the charger’s output profiles and cable power capability. For a barrel or proprietary connector, match the manufacturer-specified voltage, polarity, plug and sufficient current/power. Connector fit alone is not proof of electrical compatibility.

Identify the Exact Laptop Model and Charging Port
Use the laptop manual, original adapter label or manufacturer support page. Record the connector, required input voltage/current or USB-C PD profiles and recommended wattage. Some USB-C ports support data or video but not charging; some laptops accept USB-C power but require a proprietary adapter for full performance.

The negotiated output cannot exceed the lowest compatible part. A charger may be safe but slow when it provides a lower supported profile; under a heavy workload the battery may continue to discharge. Use the charger and cable pairing guide to isolate the full chain.
For Barrel or Proprietary Plugs, Do Not Guess
Match the exact voltage, polarity, connector dimensions/identification and manufacturer compatibility. The replacement must provide sufficient current/power for the specified laptop. A plug that physically fits can still have the wrong voltage or polarity and should not be tested by trial-and-error. Avoid loose multi-tip adapters unless the exact configuration is documented and locked against accidental change.
For fleet purchasing, record laptop model, approved charger SKU and cable together. This prevents a physically compatible spare from being moved to a laptop with different electrical requirements.
Use a Cable Rated for the Required USB-C Power
Current USB-IF cable power markings use 60W or 240W; older market cables may say 100W. Power capability is separate from data speed and video support. For higher current, verify the required electronically marked cable. Keep the length practical and remove cables with exposed conductors, loose shells or intermittent charging.

Fix Slow, Intermittent or No Charging
- Confirm the charger is connected to the laptop’s charging-capable port.
- Test one charger port and one known-good cable.
- Remove other devices from a multi-port charger.
- Compare the negotiated behavior at idle and under normal workload.
- Inspect ports for damage and clean only per manufacturer guidance.
- Stop using a charger or cable that is damaged, smells unusual, sparks or heats abnormally.
