A USB-C notebook charger can usually charge a phone safely when both devices use standards-based USB Power Delivery: the phone requests a supported voltage/current profile, and the charger does not force its maximum wattage into the phone. Check the charger output table, phone requirements and USB-C cable before treating one adapter as universal.

A 65W or 100W Charger Does Not Force Full Power
With USB Power Delivery, the source advertises supported operating conditions and the phone requests one it accepts. A charger’s 100W label is a maximum capability, not a constant push. The phone may take 20W, 27W or another supported level depending on its design, battery percentage, temperature and software.

Read the Charger Label
Look for output lines such as 5V, 9V, 15V or 20V at stated currents and any PPS range. Confirm the phone maker’s recommended charging path. A proprietary laptop barrel charger cannot charge a phone without a separately designed USB output; this guide concerns USB-C chargers.
If the phone uses a proprietary fast-charge mode that the notebook adapter does not advertise, charging may fall back to a lower shared USB condition. That is a compatibility limit, not evidence that the higher-wattage charger is forcing unsafe power into the phone.
Use the Correct Cable

Multi-Port Chargers Can Reallocate Power
A charger labeled 100W total may provide 100W only from one port when used alone. Connecting a phone can cause both ports to renegotiate. Review the allocation table for the exact port combination, especially when the notebook must remain powered during a meeting or trip.
If the Phone Charges Slowly or Not at All
- Use the charger’s intended USB-C port.
- Test a known-good cable.
- Remove hubs and adapters.
- Check the phone for temperature or battery-care limits.
- Compare the charger profiles with the phone specification.
- Test the phone and charger separately with known-good compatible equipment.
Repeat the check with other charger ports empty. If charging improves, the cause is likely the adapter’s documented power-allocation behavior rather than the phone connector itself.
