For a standard PS4, a sound High Speed HDMI cable is normally sufficient. For PS4 Pro 4K/HDR, Sony recommends a Premium HDMI cable and a TV input configured for 4K/HDR. A more expensive cable does not reduce game latency or sharpen a valid digital signal; the useful goal is a stable link at the console’s selected mode.

Match the Cable to the Console and Display Mode
| Use case | Practical cable choice | System check |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 at 1080p | Sound High Speed HDMI cable | Direct connection and correct TV input |
| PS4 Pro at 4K/HDR | Premium High Speed / Premium HDMI cable | 4K/HDR-capable TV port and enhanced input setting |
| Receiver, switch or capture card | Category required by the highest mode | Every device in the chain must pass that mode |
| Long installed route | Choose by length and tested mode | Validate the complete route before installation |
HDMI cable category is more useful than a product title that simply says “PS4 cable.” The HDMI cable buying guide explains current category names. For longer runs, use the HDMI length guide to choose between passive, active and optical options.
PS4 Pro 4K HDR Requires the Whole Path
- Connect the PS4 Pro to a TV input that supports 4K/HDR.
- Enable the TV’s enhanced, deep-color or equivalent input mode when required by that model.
- Use a Premium HDMI cable for the 4K/HDR path.
- On PS4 Pro, set Resolution and HDR to Automatic, then review Video Output Information.
- If the expected mode is missing, test the console directly to the TV before changing multiple settings.
A receiver, switch or capture device can limit the negotiated mode even when both the console and TV support it. A cable cannot add a format that an intermediate device does not pass.
Build a Known-Good Capture Chain
Start with PS4 → TV using a short known-good cable. Then add the capture card, receiver or switch. Record the resolution, HDR state, refresh rate and audio result after each addition. Use separate cables of the required category on both sides of an intermediate device.
Cable replacement can correct errors, blanking or an unstable handshake. It cannot reduce rendering latency inside the console or display. For latency, check TV game mode, capture-device pass-through and processing settings.
Fix No Signal, Black Screens or HDR Fallback
- Confirm the TV is on the correct HDMI input.
- Power down the console and display, reconnect the cable, then restart.
- Connect PS4 directly to the TV and remove all intermediate devices.
- Try another compatible TV port and a short known-good cable.
- Check PS4 Video Output Information for the negotiated mode.
- If only 4K/HDR fails, review the TV port’s enhanced-input setting and the capability of every device in the path.
