Qi2 vs MagSafe: Certification, Speed, and Compatibility

Choose Qi2 when you want a WPC-certified magnetic charging path that can be verified by product ID. Choose Apple’s MagSafe route when the priority is an Apple-documented charger and iPhone experience. Magnetic attachment alone proves neither certification nor charging speed. For the detailed Qi2 generation and 15W/25W naming comparison, see Qi2 vs Qi2 25W.

There is no automatic reason to replace a working charger solely because a newer tier exists. Upgrade when the target phone supports the tier and the faster or more consistent alignment solves a real use case.

Certified, Compatible and Magnetic Are Not Synonyms

WPC says certified products receive a WPC ID and appear in its product database. “Qi2 compatible” without a searchable ID needs clarification. Likewise, “MagSafe compatible” may describe physical attachment rather than Apple program status or a particular power level. Verify the exact statement the packaging makes.

Check the Receiver, Case, Adapter and Heat

  • Confirm the phone supports the claimed charging tier.
  • Use the adapter wattage and profile specified by the charger maker.
  • Test the intended case; thickness, metal and magnet placement affect alignment.
  • Expect charging power to change with temperature, battery state and device protection.

Apple documents that MagSafe peak power varies with the exact charger, compatible iPhone, adapter and operating conditions. WPC’s product database is the correct starting point for a Qi2 certification check.

For Retailers and OEM Buyers

Request the exact WPC ID, standard version, transmitter model and packaging claim. Build a device-and-case matrix around the phones that matter to the channel instead of publishing a universal compatibility statement.
