RF to HDMI Converter Guide: Channel 3/4 to Modern TV

You cannot convert an RF coax signal to HDMI with a passive cable. An RF source—such as a VCR or modulator on channel 3/4—must first be tuned and demodulated, then decoded/scaled into a digital HDMI output. Before buying a converter, identify the signal carried by the coax connector; RF, composite video, SDI and antenna/cable-TV feeds require different equipment.

RF Conversion Requires Active Electronics

For a channel 3/4 source, choose a converter with an analog tuner/demodulator compatible with the source’s television system and audio format, plus an HDMI output supported by the display. Some workflows use two devices: an RF demodulator that produces composite video/audio, followed by a composite-to-HDMI scaler. Confirm power supplies and connector adapters for every stage.

Tune the Source Channel Before Selecting HDMI Resolution

  1. Connect the RF output to the tuner/demodulator input.
  2. Set the legacy source and converter to the same channel or television format.
  3. Connect the converter HDMI output directly to the display.
  4. Select the correct HDMI input on the display.
  5. Start with a common supported output resolution, then adjust aspect ratio and overscan.
  6. Record channel, format, audio and HDMI output settings after a stable result.

A Converter Cannot Restore Missing Source Detail

Scaling can make a standard-definition picture compatible with a modern display, but it cannot create detail that was never in the RF source. Expect softness, noise or aspect-ratio differences from old tapes and modulators. Judge the converter by stable tuning, correct color, synchronized sound and predictable startup rather than a generic “4K output” label.

If There Is No Picture or Sound

  1. Confirm the source actually outputs RF rather than composite or SDI.
  2. Match channel 3/4 or the required analog TV standard.
  3. Test the legacy source on a known-compatible tuner when possible.
  4. Connect the converter directly to the display and remove switches.
  5. Try another supported HDMI output setting.
  6. Check whether audio uses the same RF standard and whether the converter exposes a separate audio output.
