Choose a USB-C charger by the device’s required wattage and USB Power Delivery profiles, not by the connector alone. For one phone, a compact single-port charger may be enough. For a laptop or several devices, verify each port’s output and the power-sharing table, then pair it with a cable rated for the required power.

Start with the Device’s Required Input
USB-C describes the connector, not a fixed charging speed. Check the phone, tablet or laptop manual for its supported charging input. Buying a charger with a larger maximum number does not force that power into the device; compatible USB Power Delivery products negotiate an operating level.

USB Power Delivery Profiles Matter More Than One Headline Number
USB-IF describes USB Power Delivery as a negotiated system with flexible voltage and power levels. A charger’s specification should list the fixed or adjustable profiles available on each port. A device can only use a mode supported by the charger, device and cable path.

Multi-Port Chargers Redistribute Power
A charger advertised with a total output may reduce one port when another device is connected. Read the combination table for C1, C2 and any USB-A port. If a laptop must keep charging while a phone is added, validate that exact two-device allocation rather than relying on the total printed wattage.
Also check whether unplugging or adding a device briefly renegotiates the remaining ports. A momentary interruption can be normal for some multi-port designs, but it matters for equipment that must remain continuously powered. The product specification should describe the intended allocation behavior.
Match Cable Power and Data Separately

If USB-C Charging Is Slow or Intermittent
- Connect one device to the charger’s highest-capability USB-C port.
- Use a short known-good cable rated for the required power.
- Check whether another occupied port changes the allocation.
- Confirm the device’s battery temperature and charge-management limits.
- Replace accessories with loose plugs, exposed conductors, scorching or repeated connection loss.
