USB-A and Micro-USB-B are not two ends competing for the same device role. USB-A is the familiar rectangular host-side connector; Micro-B is a smaller device-side connector used on legacy phones, accessories and equipment. A USB-A-to-Micro-B cable can connect them, but speed and charging depend on the USB generation, cable wiring and both devices.

USB-A Is Commonly the Host End
A computer, charger or hub may provide a USB-A receptacle. A legacy phone, camera, speaker or accessory may provide Micro-B. The cable connects those roles. Connector shape does not by itself reveal whether the cable carries data, what current it supports or which charging protocol the devices use.
Micro-B Is Directional and Has Variants

Do not force Micro-B into the wrong orientation. A USB 2.0 Micro-B plug is not the same shape as the wider SuperSpeed Micro-B connector used by some external drives.
Connector Shape Does Not Set the Complete Capability
A USB-A port can implement different USB generations. A Micro-B cable can be charge-only or include data conductors. The practical link falls back to the capability shared by host, cable and device. A charging result also depends on the charger, device negotiation and cable resistance—not merely the presence of USB-A.
When documenting a cable, list both connector ends, USB generation, data rate, supported current, length and intended charging mode. “Micro USB cable” is incomplete because it does not distinguish USB 2.0 Micro-B from the wider SuperSpeed Micro-B type or reveal whether data wires are present.
Match Both Ends and the Required Function
- Photograph or label both device ports before ordering.
- Confirm USB 2.0 or SuperSpeed Micro-B where data speed matters.
- Require explicit data support for syncing or file transfer.
- Record cable length, current rating and strain-relief requirements.

Troubleshoot the Cable Before the Device Port
- Try a known-good cable with the same declared function.
- Test another charger or host port.
