Choose USB-C for most new charging-accessory designs because it is reversible and can support a broader range of power, data and display functions. Keep USB-A when the product must work with an installed base of older chargers, computers or vehicle ports. The connector alone does not prove charging wattage, data speed or video support; specify each capability separately.

Connector Shape Is Not a Performance Specification
USB-A and USB-C describe physical connector families. USB data generation, charging protocol, current, video support and certification are separate dimensions. A USB-C port may provide basic USB data only, or it may also provide USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort Alt Mode or another documented function. A USB-A port can likewise expose different USB data generations and charging behavior.
For product documentation, avoid claims such as “USB-C means fast charging” unless the exact charger, cable and device path supports the stated protocol and power level. USB-IF’s current consumer logos separate certified USB data performance from certified power capability for the same reason.
Choose the Connector by the Product’s Job
- New wall charger or power bank: prioritize USB-C when the intended devices and required USB PD profiles support it.
- Replacement cable for an older charger: USB-A to USB-C may be the practical bridge, but the older source remains the limit.
- Computer accessory: record whether the requirement is charging, data, video or several functions; do not select by plug shape alone.
- Vehicle, hotel or installed fleet: inventory the existing ports before removing USB-A compatibility.
- Retail assortment: separate legacy-compatibility SKUs from higher-capability USB-C-to-USB-C SKUs so packaging claims remain clear.
Plan a USB-A-to-USB-C Transition Without Overpromising

Do not imply that an adapter or mixed-connector cable upgrades the legacy source. A USB-A charger does not become a USB-C Power Delivery source simply because the device end is USB-C.
Write a Complete Cable or Charger Specification
Record connector direction, supported data rate, charging protocol, maximum voltage/current, cable length, intended devices and required certification or marking. For multi-port chargers, also define how power is reallocated when another device is connected. This specification is more useful than a broad “USB-A vs USB-C” label and gives engineering, packaging and incoming inspection the same acceptance target.
