A USB-A to USB-B cable is the familiar printer-style USB cable: the flat rectangular USB-A plug connects to the computer or host, while the squarer USB-B plug connects to the peripheral. It is commonly used for printers, scanners, audio interfaces, test equipment and some 3D printers. Match the exact USB-B port and required data specification before buying.

USB-A and Standard USB-B Have Different Roles

This page concerns standard USB-B, not Mini-USB or Micro-USB. USB 3.x Type-B connectors also have a different upper section and require a matching receptacle. Inspect the equipment port or manual instead of relying only on the phrase “printer cable.”
Where USB-A to USB-B Cables Are Still Used
- Printers and multifunction office devices.
- Scanners and label printers.
- USB audio and MIDI interfaces.
- Laboratory, industrial and measurement equipment.
- Some 3D printers and machine-control interfaces.
A wired USB-B connection can provide a stable direct link when the installed peripheral already supports it. It does not mean the cable powers the entire device; many printers and instruments require their own power supply.
Connector Shape Does Not Prove Data Speed
USB-A and USB-B describe connector types. The port, cable and peripheral documentation determine the supported USB data mode. A cable built only for USB 2.0 does not become faster when connected to a newer USB-A port. Likewise, a higher-rated cable cannot make an older printer transfer beyond its own interface.

Fix “Printer Not Detected” One Variable at a Time
- Confirm the peripheral is powered and ready.
- Seat the USB-B plug fully without forcing it.
- Connect directly to a known-good USB-A host port.
- Remove hubs and extension cables during diagnosis.
- Test a known-good cable of the same required type.
- Install the device maker’s driver or software when required.
If movement interrupts the connection, inspect both plugs and the device receptacle. Replace a cable with a loose shell, damaged jacket, exposed conductor or intermittent data. Do not use the cable to pull or reposition the equipment.

- Standard USB-B or the exact alternate Type-B variant.
- Required USB data mode.
- Shortest practical installed length.
- Shielding and noise requirements for audio or measurement use.
- Connector retention, strain relief and bend-life evidence.
