Choose a USB-C computer charger by the laptop’s documented USB Power Delivery input, then check port sharing and the cable. A charger can safely have a higher maximum rating than the computer needs because the devices negotiate a supported profile; the computer will not automatically receive the full number printed on the charger.

Start with the Computer Manufacturer’s Requirement
Check the original adapter label or the computer maker’s support page for the recommended USB-C input. A small ultraportable and a performance laptop may use the same connector while requiring very different power. If the computer supports USB-C charging but the replacement charger is undersized, it may charge slowly, stop gaining charge under load or display a low-power warning.

The Wattage Total Is Not the Whole Specification
USB Power Delivery uses negotiated voltage and current profiles. The charger, computer and cable must share a compatible path. PPS is useful only when the receiving device supports it. Higher-power EPR operation also requires compatible source, device and cable conditions; it should not be inferred from USB-C shape alone.
Read the Multi-Port Allocation Table
A “100W” multi-port charger may provide that maximum from one port only when the others are empty. Connecting a phone can cause the charger to redistribute power or briefly renegotiate. Check C1 alone, C2 alone, C1+C2 and any USB-A combination that you plan to use.

Match Cable Power and Data Separately
Current USB-IF certified USB-C-to-USB-C cable power markings use 60W or 240W. A power marking does not state data speed or video support. For charging, use a cable rated for the required power; for a dock or monitor, also verify the data and display capability. Desk Charger or Travel Charger?
For a permanent desk, prioritize stable port allocation, cable reach and thermal clearance. For travel, prioritize the required laptop output in the smallest practical package, a removable cable you can replace, and the correct regional plug. GaN can help a design reach higher switching density, but the GaN label alone does not prove lower temperature, better efficiency or sustained output.
