To transfer files directly between two computers over USB, use a purpose-built USB bridge or transfer cable with an internal controller and supported software. Do not connect two USB host ports with an ordinary passive USB-A-to-USB-A cable. A normal cable does not turn either computer into a USB device and may create an invalid power connection.

USB Normally Connects a Host to a Device
A computer is ordinarily a USB host. A storage drive, printer or bridge controller appears as a device. Two hosts cannot exchange files merely because a cable physically fits both ports. Set Up a Transfer Without Guessing
- Confirm that the bridge cable supports both operating-system versions.
- Download software only from the cable maker or a trusted OS store.
- Back up important files before migration.

- Choose source and destination carefully and test with a small folder.
- Verify file counts and open several transferred files before deleting the originals.

Marketing interface rates are not file-copy guarantees. Controller generation, port mode, storage speed, file size, encryption, antivirus scanning and software overhead all affect throughput. Check the markings next to the ports and the bridge controller’s actual specification.
A Network or External Drive May Be Simpler
For a one-time move, an external SSD can provide an easy backup and transfer path. For repeated transfers, a wired network or trusted local sharing tool may be more maintainable. Browse the cable category by declared connector and data capability, not by a generic “USB-to-USB” label.
