Optimized Battery Charging on iPhone: How It Works

Optimized Battery Charging on iPhone reduces the time the battery spends fully charged. When iPhone predicts that it will remain connected to power for an extended period, it can pause charging past 80% and finish closer to when you normally unplug. It is designed to reduce battery wear, but it does not repair an aged battery or guarantee a particular lifespan.

How Optimized Battery Charging Works

Apple says the feature uses on-device machine learning to learn a user’s daily charging routine. In situations where a long connection is predicted, iPhone can delay charging past 80%. The aim is to reduce the time the battery remains fully charged. The behavior is intentionally conditional, so it may not activate during travel, an irregular schedule or a short charging session.

Apple also notes that the feature needs time and repeated long charging sessions in a familiar location to learn a routine. A newly configured phone or frequently changing schedule may therefore charge straight through even when the feature is enabled. That is not, by itself, evidence of a charger fault.

When the feature is active, the Lock Screen notification shows when charging is expected to finish. If you need a full charge sooner, touch and hold that notification and choose Charge Now.

Where to Find the Charging Setting

The menu depends on the iPhone model and iOS version. On supported recent models, open Settings > Battery > Charging. Some models and software versions show Battery Health & Charging instead. iPhone 15 models and later can also offer a Charge Limit; Apple states that Optimized Battery Charging is available when that limit is set to 100%.

Charging optimization is enabled by default during iPhone setup. Before changing it because charging stopped near 80%, check the notification and the current charging setting.

When a One-Time Override Makes Sense

SituationPractical action
Normal overnight routineLeave optimization enabled and let iPhone schedule completion
Unexpected early departureUse Charge Now for that session
Charging repeatedly stops without an optimization noticeCheck temperature, power source, cable and battery settings
Battery health is already degradedReview Battery Health and Apple service guidance; optimization cannot restore lost capacity

What the Feature Does Not Prove

Optimized charging does not make every charger or cable equivalent. Heat, a damaged accessory, an unstable power source and device use while charging can still affect the session. It also does not mean that charging to 100% is unsafe; the feature manages time at full charge as a battery-wear strategy.

Wireless charging questions should be evaluated separately. The wireless charging and battery-health guide explains why temperature and alignment matter more than a simple wired-versus-wireless label.
